Best Garage Floor Paints On The Market - Individual Reviews
A garage floor paint should be your go-to choice if you want to breathe in new life into your concrete floors. Not only can you use these paints on garage floors, but you can also use them to cover the cracks and stains on your porch or stairs.
They’re a cheaper solution to garage floor mats and can last much longer. Garage floor mats can start warping over time, not to mention how much maintenance they require. On the other hand, garage floor paints don’t require any maintenance. Just apply some to your concrete floor, wait for it to dry, and you’re done.
After a couple of dozen hours of research and hundreds of products, I give you my list of best garage paints you can find on the current market. And if you want to learn more about these wonderful products, I recommend you check out the FAQ, since it can serve as an excellent buyer’s guide.
1. Rust Bullet Duragrade Concrete - Editor’s Choice
Our Rating: 93/100
We start this list with one of the best garage floor paints on the market. Known as one of the “premier” brands of garage floor paint, Rust Bullet Duragrade Concrete is considered an industry standard when it comes to protecting your garage floor. This paint’s main feature is its ability to create a slip-resistant coating that will last for years as well as provide some aesthetic appeal to your garage.
This product has quite a few advantages over its competitors. For starters, it doesn’t require any type of primer or special coating. This means you won’t have to shell out the extra cash and spend spare time prepping your garage floor for the actual paint.
What’s more, you won’t have any acid etching of your concrete floor! Rust Bullet Duragrade Concrete is more than capable of achieving maximum adhesion on its own.
This is not where the good stuff ends. This garage floor paint is also incredibly resistant to chipping and melting. Thanks to its unique UV resistance, you can have your garage door open during the entire summer without worrying it’ll start melting and cracking. Of course, you also don’t have to worry about chipping it with your car tires because of its incredible adhesion properties.
When it comes to color, this is one of the most versatile floor paints on the market. Rust Bullet Duragrade Concrete is available in 18 different colors. The color variety is nothing short of stunning. Not only does it come in basic colors like white and black, but it also comes in a few unique shades like wine red, storm gray, pistachio, and others. To top it all, this garage floor paint can also be further supplemented with color flakes.
No product is perfect, and the same goes for this floor paint. To ensure this paint last for a long time, you’ll have to apply two coats. This brings up the cost noticeably, especially if you own a big car garage. Still, you won’t find another floor paint that’s this simple to use, long-lasting, and comes in this much color variety.
2. KILZ L377611 - 1-Part Epoxy Acrylic - Best 1-Part Epoxy Garage Floor Paint
Our Rating: 91/100
If you’re one of those people who don’t like complications with floor paint, KILZ L337611 garage floor paint might be the right choice for you. Unlike most floor paints on the market which require a coat of primer before you apply the paint, you can apply KILZ paint without any special prepping. In other words, L337611 1-part epoxy paint is the best one-can solution for your garage concrete floor.
The best thing about this paint is that it’s universal. You can apply it to almost any surface you can think of. You got some bare concrete you want to refresh? Give it two coats of this garage floor paint and enjoy. You can also apply this floor paint on wood, and it even copes with vertical surfaces quite well.
Unfortunately, this floor paint’s main advantage is also it’s the biggest disadvantage. Because it’s a universal paint, you’ll have to apply a second coat to ensure it won’t chip or melt. This will considerably bring up the cost per sq ft, so don’t expect to come out cheap.
With that said, this is still an excellent product. Why? Well, because it’s water-based, it’s environmentally friendly and doesn’t smell while it dries. On top of that, it also dries relatively quickly.
When it comes to color choice, there is none. This floor paint is available in only one color, matte gray. While this won’t impress anyone that walks into your garage, since gray is a neutral color, it will easily blend in with most color combinations.
KILZ L377611 1-part epoxy paint offers some of the best anti-slipping properties on the market. That's because the matte color gives this paint a slightly abrasive texture that ensures you won’t slip even when the garage floor is covered with water.
Unfortunately, this garage floor paint doesn’t fare that well with vehicle tires, especially if it’s a hot tier. If you drive in your car after a summer drive, a hot tire will pick up the paint like it’s freshly applied.
Many people have complained that it chips quite easily, especially if the tiers are hot. And even if they’re not hot, if you own a heavy vehicle, there’s a great chance it’ll chip due to pressure.
If your garage receives a lot of traffic, I wouldn’t recommend you go for this floor paint. You’ll be better off with my top pick. I would recommend this garage floor paint to those who are using their garage for storage or place to work.
3. Rust-Oleum 251965 Garage Floor Kit - Best For Garage Epoxy Floors
Our Rating: 92/100
Are you too impatient to wait for the floor paint to dry? Do you want to make your garage look more like an exhibition room than a garage? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might be interested in my third pick, the Rust-Oleum 251965 Garage Floor Kit!
Rust-Oleum isn’t a floor paint. This product is more of a garage floor epoxy. 251965 Garage Floor Kit comes in a combination of two epoxy substances. One is a tinted resin, and the other is a polyamine hardener. These two substances ensure this paint dries incredibly fast. What’s more, since this is epoxy paint, you won’t have to worry about washing it out with water since these floor paints are waterproof.
Rust-Oleum kit includes the paint itself, dry epoxy solutions, an inscription booklet, and a floor cleaner. You will have to treat the concrete with the cleaner before you start other work. If you don’t, you are risking the paint not sticking that well to the surface.
Another cool thing about the Rust-Oleum epoxy kit is that it’s water-based. You won’t stink up your entire house and half the neighborhood when you apply it to your garage floor. The manufacturer claims that you can step on your newly painted floor and park your car within 24 hours.
Unfortunately, there are some downsides to this wonderful product from Rust-Oleum. For starters, since water makes 50% of the solution, the thickness of the coating might be less than you think. And if you live in a colder region, you will have to wait more than 24 hours before you walk on it because water doesn’t evaporate that good at low temperatures.
With that said, it’s hard not to recommend the Rust-Oleum 251965 Garage Floor Kit. It comes in glossy gray and tan, and you can further increase the appeal of the paint by adding some paint chips. On top of that, it forms an incredibly thick and strong layer of epoxy that’ll withstand even the heaviest of vehicles. As a cherry on top, with just one kit, you can cover up to 250 sq ft of garage floor!
4. Epoxy Floor Kit - Epoxy-Coat Full Kit Taupe - Best High-Gloss Garage Paint
Our Rating: 90/100
Epoxy-Coat is a well-known brand of garage floor pains of the epoxy kind. This company has been around for 35 years. During the years, Epoxy-Coat has earned a reputation for manufacturing high-quality, single coat garage floor coatings. This epoxy paint will transform your plain concrete garage floor into a showroom floor in no time!
Unlike the previous epoxy paint I reviewed, the Epoxy Floor Kit isn’t water-based. The lack of water in the formula offers quite a few benefits. For starters, epoxy-coat floor coating is almost 4 times thicker after curing. What’s more, this epoxy for garage floor also lasts nearly five times more than water-based epoxy paint.
Out of the box, you get everything you need, It comes with a primer, 2 gallons of epoxy part A, 1 gallon of epoxy part B, a squeegee, a brush, a roller cover, a mechanical mixer, and even a pair of vinyl gloves. We wish more companies offered these “one-bucket” solutions.
Unlike garage floor paints, this Epoxy Floor Kit requires you to prepare your concrete garage floor. Thankfully, the kit comes with the primer, and if you run out, you can always add more to the cart. You must apply the primer correctly, or the epoxy won’t stick right.
The coolest thing about this epoxy paint is that it creates a thick floor coating. This garage floor coating is almost 10 millimeters thick, and it doesn’t thin out as it cures. This is because this is a pure epoxy mix, there is no water to evaporate.
When it comes to color choice, this product is as fantastic as my first pick. It’s available in 8 different colors ranging from white and black to tan and beige. And if you want to enhance the color of your garage floor, you can use some of the included paint chips.
Unfortunately, there are some issues with this product. Although it makes an excellent glossy finish and sticks to the concrete like crazy, it scratches and stains quite easily. A hot tire will leave a mark after a couple of minutes. And if you have lots of foot traffic in your garage, you will start noticing foot marks after a couple of months. Still, it’s worth buying if you live in a colder area, and you don’t spend much time in the garage.
5. SlipDoctors Dura Grip - Non-Slip Paint - Best Universal Garage Floor Paint
Our Rating: 88/100
If you’re looking for a garage epoxy paint that won’t hurt your budget while producing excellent results, I recommend you keep on reading. SlipDoctors Dura Grip is an up and coming garage floor paint that can be applied to almost any surface. On top of all this, it’s incredibly weather-resistant and can withstand quite a lot of automotive and foot traffic.
Unlike other most floor paints out there, SlipDoctors DuraGrip doesn’t require any prep before application. No need for acid etching, spending hundreds of bucks on expensive primers, just open the can and start coating the paint. Unfortunately, since this isn’t an epoxy kit, you will have to apply a double coat. This brings up the cost a bit, but that’s negligible since this paint is quite affordable.
This is one of the best garage floor paints if you’re looking for a simple solution to freshen up your garage and porch. When it dries, this floor paint will make a textured, non-slip surface that’ll provide superb grip even when the floor is soaking wet.
And don’t worry about this paint melting or peeling when in contact with a hot tire. SlipDoctors Dura Grip epoxy paint is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, hot and cold.
When it comes to color choice, this is one of the most versatile floor paints on the market. Not only does it come in “basic” colors like white, red and blue - it’s also available as in clear color. Unfortunately, the clear coating is a bit cloudy, so I don’t recommend you use it on surfaces that aren’t white or beige. Thankfully, other colors are quite solid.
Even though you don’t have to apply any primers, you will have to thoroughly clean the surface before applying this epoxy paint. When it comes to the garage floor, I recommend you wash the concrete with water and let it dry for a day or two. This will ensure the paint won’t start chipping or peeling off after a couple of months. The same goes for other surfaces. If you don’t give it a thorough scrubbing, this product starts to come off after a while.
6. UNITED GILSONITE LAB 23813 Drylok E-1 - Best For Budget Option
Our Rating: 87/100
United Gilsonite Lab is a company that specializes in various types of paints, coatings, and sealants for a wide range of products and surfaces. Their 23813 Drylok E-1 epoxy paint is an excellent example of this company’s expertise at making high-quality products for pretty much any situation.
United Gilsonite Lab 23813 Drylok E-1 is a 1-part epoxy garage floor paint that can handle all kinds of abuse you can think of. Thanks to UGL’s advanced formula, this product won’t melt when in contact with a hot tire. What’s more, it handles all the foot traffic in the world without staining, and it can endure extreme temperatures.
Since this is a one-part epoxy garage floor paint, you don’t have to go through the trouble of mixing it. Just open the can and start coating the concrete, the paint will dry in less than a day.
If the fact that this is a synthetic garage floor paint worries you, you should know that this product has incredibly low VOC amount per liter. This means it’s almost odorless, and it won’t cause any harm to your respiratory system if you breathe it in.
Unlike true epoxy coatings, where you can apply just one coat, you will have to apply this paint in two coatings. This brings up the cost, but the results are worth the extra money. This garage floor paint creates an excellent non-slip texture that offers just the right amount of grip. You won’t slip even if you flood your garage with water.
Speaking of water, this product is fully water-resistant, so you can wash it without having to worry it’ll start chipping off. What’s more, it can handle both high and low temperatures exceptionally well. I haven’t seen anyone complain about this garage floor paint starting to bubble up and chip after a cold winter.
The only thing I don’t like about this garage floor paint is the lack of variety. This product is available in only one color, light gray. This leaves a lot to be desired since this is quite a solid paint, and the inclusion of new colors would boost its sales. Still, this is one of the best garage floor paints I’ve come across.
Best Garage Floor Paint - FAQ
Q: What types of garage floor paint are there?
Garage floor paints are available in five different types:
Latex Garage Floor Paints - is the most basic type of garage floor paint. Although latex is not the most affordable material in the world, latex-based garage floor paints are very popular because they dry very quickly and are rated for outdoor use. Unfortunately, there are a few drawbacks to garage floor paints of this type. While they seal the concrete quite well, the seal is not perfect. On top of that, this paint requires you to prep the concrete before applying it. If you don’t, this garage floor paint will start chipping and bubbling.
Acrylic Garage Floor Paints - are pretty similar to latex-based paints. The main advantage of this type of garage floor paint is that it can be applied to both non-primed and primed surfaces. This type of garage floor paint forms an excellent floor coating. However, it’s prone to scratches and staining.
Epoxy Floor Paints - are one of the most popular options when it comes to garage floor painting. Epoxy floor paints are the middle child of floor paints and epoxies. This type of garage floor paint forms a thick glossy layer that’s both water-proof and stain-proof. Unfortunately, these garage floor paints can be quite expensive, and you can easily mess up the mixing process. Epoxy paints are excellent if you want to have the best garage floor in the neighborhood.
Urethane Garage Floor Paint - represents an upgraded version of an epoxy floor paint. However, they are more advanced than epoxy paints. For starters, urethane paint is more flexible than other types of garage floor paints. What’s more, they are also stain-resistant and won’t melt when in contact with a hot tire. Unfortunately, urethane garage floor paint doesn’t stick to the concrete that well, and in many cases, you will have to treat the surface with epoxy before applying this paint.
Polyurea Garage Floor Paint - is a subset of urethane paints. The main difference is that this type of paint can dry in as little as five seconds, and are completely hard after just five minutes.
Q: What are the main differences between the types of paint?
A: As you might have gathered from the previous question. There are quite a few differences between different types of garage floor paints.
The main difference between the different types of garage floor paints is how thick of a layer the form, how much easy they are to apply, and how resistant they are. Acrylic paint can’t be used outdoors and is quite prone to scratches and staining. This is the polar opposite of epoxy paints. Epoxies are incredibly durable and can be used both indoors and outdoors. However, they are more expensive and are just as prone to scratches and stains as acrylic paint.
Q: What is the best type of paint to use on a garage floor?
A: There is no right answer to this question.
There is no best garage floor paint that everyone. No product rules over others. It all depends on your needs. If you just want to cover the ugly cracks and stains on your garage floor, I recommend you go for acrylic paint or a 1 part epoxy paint.
If you’re planning on breathing in new life to your garage, then you should go for epoxies. These garage floor paints won’t just cover all the imperfections, They’ll transform your garage completely. And since most epoxy kits come with paint chips, you can further enhance the look of your garage by throwing them in while you apply the second coat of paint.
After It's All Said and Done, I Recommend:
Choosing the best garage floor paint is no easy feat. There is no one product that is the best. The market is flooded with all kinds of brands that each offer their own unique feature set. However, with some research, and with the help of this article, I’m sure you’ll pick the right garage floor paint with no problem.I’ve chosen Rust Bullet Duragrade Concrete as my top pick because it ticks all the right boxes. It’s incredibly easy to apply, comes in a wide variety of colors, and is cheaper than garage floor mats.
